What does HMO mean?

HMO is the acronym for Human Milk Oligosaccharides.

What is the HMO Academy?

The HMO Academy is the first and only knowledge hub dedicated to Human Milk Oligosaccharides. It is designed to facilitate the access to HMO knowledge to all healthcare professionals involved in infant care; as well as to Nestlé employees involved in infant nutrition.

Why develop the awareness and understanding of HMOs by healthcare professionals?

Human Milk Oligosaccharides are the 3rd largest component of breast milk and lead contributors to our children’s healthy development. Especially, HMOs are now recognized as fundamental drivers of the maturing immune system of babies; making them one of the most obvious reasons why breastfeeding is best for infants.

Why is it important to know and understand what HMOs are and do?

HMOs contribute to the superiority of breastfeeding. By developing the awareness of HMOs’ multiple benefits among healthcare professionals, we help promote breastfeeding.

The HMO Academy is sponsored by Nestlé Nutrition, the world leader in infant nutrition and a pioneer in HMO technologies.

Why does Nestlé support breastfeeding?

We believe that breastfeeding is best for babies and support the World Health Organization’s recommendation calling for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding along with the introduction of complementary foods as advised by a health care professional or health authority.We include the wording ‘breastfeeding is best’ whenever and wherever possible and relevant, such as on infant formula packaging and in all communications. We also develop educational materials for health care professionals and parents on the benefits of breastfeeding. We also run campaigns and seminars on breastfeeding for the medical community in partnership with governments and medical institutions.

Can I trust the contents published by the HMO Academy?

The contents available through the HMO Academy are based on scientific material published in textbooks, peer-reviewed medical journals and contributions from independent scientific and medical experts. Contents are referenced and all references are available on-line in full-text form.

Why should I register as HMO Academy trainee to access its website?

The HMO Academy website is designed to provide a comprehensive training and regular updates about HMOs. By registering you get a personal, quick and secured access to contents, which allows you to receive regular updates and follow-up your gradual learning achievements.

Why are all activities scored?

The scoring system is designed to help you track your own learning achievements, and motivate you to read and interact with peers and experts.

How does the scoring system work?

Each activity offered on the HMO Academy online platform has a clearly visible score rate (number of points) attached to it. When you choose to take this activity, the respective number of points is added to your personal score counter.

Why accumulate points? Is there anything to win?

By accruing your personal score, you progress towards the status of HMO Academy Graduate, through 4 intermediate trainee levels  Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
